The Funiculars

Lugano is bordered by two pyramids which overhang the magnificent Lake of Lugano: the Monte Brè (923 m) in the east and the Monte San Salvatore (912 m) in the south. Each of these summits can be reached by an inclined railway.

Funicular Monte Brè

From the summit of the Monte Brè, the eyesight is splendid over the lake, the city of Lugano, the splendor of Monte Rosa, the Bernese and Vallese Alps as seen from the top of Switzerland's sunniest mountain. On the other side of the lake it is also possible to see the old funicular of Lanzio d'Intelvi after the Italian border.

Funicular Monte San Salvatore

The second pyramid which dominates the Lake of Lugano is the Monte San Salvatore (912 meters). The summit can be reached with the funicular Monte San Salvatore which was built in 1890.
From the top of the Monte San Salvatore the 360° panorama is wonderful with the Lake of Lugano, the isthmus of Mélide, the Monte Generoso and the Italian enclave of Campione on the other side of the lake. Campione if famous for its gambling Casino (gambling is forbidden in Switzerland). Note that there was a project, never made, to build a cable way from Sighignola (Italy) at the top of the mountain to allow the Italians to reach the Italian enclave of Campione from Lanzo d'Intelvi.

There are three major supermarket chains in Switzerland: Coop, Migros and Manor. These are all fair-sized supermarkets with everything you need.

Swiss Chocolate
As you might have guessed, the Swiss love their chocolates and so do the tourists. Every grocery store has a large chocolate area with every type of chocolate bar you can imagine.

Grocery Bags
In Swiss stores, you are expected to bring a grocery bag with you. However, if you do not have one, you can get one within the store for a small fee.

Opening Hours
Stores are open from Monday to Saturday, normally from 8.00 a.m. to 12.00 a.m. and from 1.30 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. Big supermarkets and stores in the town centers are also open at lunch time.
